The holiday season is sneaking up on us again this year, and it’s almost time to start driving around to look at the best Christmas light displays. Driving around the neighborhood looking at the decorated homes is one of our favorite things to do, but if you want to try something a little different this year, we’ve put together a list of the 12 best Christmas light displays that you can find in Texas.

12. Hill Country’s Lighting Trail

The Hill Country Lighting Trail is a sight that you must see during the holiday season; ten nearby towns work together to provide a massive, shimmering light display from San Antonio to Austin.

Some of the towns you might want to stop by are Burnet, which transforms the city into a full-scale recreation of Bethlehem, and Fredericksburg, displaying their German heritage with a full-scale, European-themed Marktplatz.

San Antonio’s River Walk Lights

During the holiday season, the San Antonio River turns into a fantastic sight with over 100,000 twinkling Christmas lights on display. At the beginning of the season, the town throws a massive parade to kick off the show.

Throughout December, lighted boats mozy on the river as an additional decoration. Some of these boats provide music and entertainment for those enjoying the lights, and others even have passengers enjoying a meal while sailing through the display.

Cleburne’s Whistle Stop Christmas Lights

Just south of Fort Worth, Cleburne’s Whistle Stop light show has been a fan-favorite for over 20 years. The downtown market square has every inch decorated with lights and other seasonal displays.

In early December, the festival starts with a lighted Christmas parade that marches through the city and ends in the market square. After the parade, you can browse for gifts, see Santa Claus, or take a stroll through the lighted town.

Richmond’s Campfire Christmas

The Campfire Christmas is an experience that you won’t find outside of Texas — this is a celebration just like the original pioneers would have had. This “Cowboy Christmas” in Richmond takes place at the George Ranch Historical Park, where you can have an old-fashioned Christmas dinner.

Take a hay wagon around the park, see the Jones Stock Farm all decorated with lights, and listen to old-time stories told by the light of candles at the Richmond Campfire Christmas. The park also hosts a Children’s Campfire Christmas and a New Year’s Eve party.

Frisco’s Christmas in the Square

Christmas in the Square is often called the largest light and music show in all of Northern Texas for a good reason. With over 750,000 visitors each year, family and friends come from all over the country to see the spectacular show.

Regardless of the weather forecast, you can enjoy a winter wonderland in Frisco — they have snow machines in the square to help create the real feeling of Christmas.

Addison’s Vitruvian Lights

Beginning just after Thanksgiving, the Vitruvian Lights in Addison transforms the park into a magical place. It features an incredible light display, with all of the trees decorated along with the rest of Vitruvian Park.

The lights are up and running every night until January, and they have live music each Saturday of the season — it’s the perfect place to see an incredible Christmas display.

Houston’s Zoo Lights

From November to January, the Houston Zoo gets decked out in Christmas style for each visitor to enjoy. You can see their black light jungle displays and amazing light animals as well as the regular zoo attractions.

Other than the animals and decorations, they offer other activities like caroling and gingerbread house decorating. The Houston Zoo Lights is a festival that the whole family can enjoy.

Fort Worth’s Gift of Lights

Fort Worth’s Texas Motor Speedway puts on a massive drive-through Christmas light display each year. With over 600 displays spread across the 1.5-mile track, it is a sight to be seen for sure. In the middle of the track, you can visit Santa’s Village, where you can get snacks, hot cocoa, and, of course, meet with Santa Claus.

Starting right before Thanksgiving, you have plenty of time to plan a visit.

Johnson City’s Lights Spectacular

The Johnson City Blanco County Courthouse hosts one of the most impressive Christmas light displays in all of Texas. The courthouse and the area around it are decorated with over 100,000 lights, and the best part is that it’s completely free.

Opening on the last weekend of November and running through all of December, make sure to stop by and see Johnson City decorated in all of its glory.

Marble Fall’s Walkway of Lights

One of the largest holiday events, the Walkway of Lights in Marble Falls, features over 2 million lights and hundreds of sculptures in Lakeside Park. They also host an annual parade that marks the opening of the park.

You can walk through the park in half an hour, but you’ll probably spend a lot more time looking at all of the decorations. On the weekends, children can see Santa and his elves.

Odessa’s Starbright Village

In Odessa, McKinney Park is home to the Starbright Village each holiday season that is on display nightly each day of December. Withalmost 300,000 lights and all of your favorite Christmas tunes, the Starbright Village is the largest light display in the Permian Basin.

You can walk or drive through the park’s light displays, and Santa makes an appearance on Friday and Saturday nights.

San Saba’s Christmas Extravaganza

Throughout the season, Mill Pond Park in San Saba turns into a real Christmas extravaganza. Also known as the“Dancing Lights”, the entire light display is synced with a local radio station so that you can tune in and watch the lights dance to your favorite Christmas songs.

The event is entirely free, and you can either take a stroll through the park or drive around listening to the music as the lights shimmer to the beat.
